A simple assault is committed if someone: (1) attempts or intentionally causes bodily injury to another; (2) negligently causes bodily injury with a deadly weapon; or (3) puts someone in fear of serious injury by engaging in physical menace. A simple assault is enhanced to an aggravated assault if the victim is a police officer, teacher, EMT or another individual granted heightened protection by law. An aggravated assault also results where the victim sustains serious bodily injury, significant bodily injury or any number of other circumstances apply.
